The House of Pride and Other Tales of Hawaii edition by Jack London Reference eBooks
Jack London is a master storyteller. His skill shines through on these pages in both his keen observations of the nuances of life in Hawaii and his own narrative commentary. Unfortunately, these stories focus on European and Asian communities, with occasional forays into American. There is very little here that shines a light on the nuances of life among native Hawaiians. When they appear, they are like a circus sideshow, off in a tent away from the main story. As I reader, I got the impression that he either did not experience life among genuine Hawaiians, or he ignored their existence while he was there. There is one exception, the story of a native songstress who develops leprosy, but even here his focus is less on the woman than it is on how her disease impacts the life and assumptions of the narrator's very American companion who happened to grow up in Hawaii.Product details

The House of Pride and Other Tales of Hawaii edition by Jack London Reference eBooks Reviews
Simple stories and some of them are predictable. It's a pleasant enough read but not especially interesting. This is nothing compared to London's tales of the frozen north.
Jack London, master story teller, displays his brilliance in these wonderful tales set in Hawaii. A truly great read, fast, exciting, entertaining, you will lose yourself as you travel back to a simplier time in old Hawaii. London makes you see the lepers of Molokai as they truly were.
Love Jack London's stories about Hawaii. There is some prejudice / words that may shock some, but if you can overlook that - it was written about 100 yrs ago.
Interesting book. Stories of the South Pacific/Hawaii. Better than Call of the Wild.
I was refreshingly entertained by each story told in a unique and nostalgic voice. I was reminded of the atrocities of human rights violations that were at the time common place. Very different stories that enables you to make the shift as they are beautifully written with an artistic flair that only our older and long gone authors have been able to accomplish. Words that have never seen the light of day since forever, make their come-back with each few turns of the page. I loved it, but I may be partial to the islands since Hawaii is my on-going love affair. Peace. Kawi.
It's been a long, ling time since I read Jack London and I'd forgotten what an engrossing storyteller he was. When I read that he had a collection of stories about Hawaii, and found them free on kindle, I expected some minor, deservedly forgotten work. Not so. I picked them up to kill some time and couldn't stop until I finished. Highly recommended to people who enjoy good stories, takes of the tropics, history or social history.
Turn of the century Hawaii. Other reviewers have done an excellent job reviewing this book so what can I add to the mix? The main theme is lepers, a tragic disease [Hansen's Disease] that afflicted Hawaii during the time period. Lepers were forceably relocated to Molokai, one of the smaller islands in the Hawaiian chain. Little was known of the disease and forced isolation was the norm. The disease is treatable today with modern medicine and Molokai is now on the tourist trail although not as popular as Oahu and the Big Island. I believe there are still some elderly individuals living on Molokai that were part of the forced evacuations. London writes about what he has seen and experienced or at least heard about from credible sources. It's a sad collection of tales, but history is history whether we like it or not. A minor theme is race-mixing, very common in Hawaii but virtually taboo in the lower 48. It was an issue during the time frame explored but not so much of an issue today; even in the lower 48. Trying to develop a family tree in Hawaii for those families that have lived there for the past hundred years or so would be a monumental task, more like a woods rather than a tree.
